Here are a few sketch covers I drew up. For those who don’t know what a sketch cover is, it’s a special “variant” edition of a comic book title that comes with an extra cover left blank with the comic title’s logo. It’s meant to be drawn on. Some people take them to comic conventions. Typically getting an artist they like to draw the title character on the cover directly. If they have the money and patience, some get the creators or artist of the title to draw on it. I use them as drawing breaks. When working on heavy personal projects I get a little tired of drawing my own junk and get a wild hair to draw another creator’s character in between. What better medium to draw on right?
I’ve been asked to do commissions, but I typically turn it down. These are just fun monotony breakers. Drawing them for someone else defeats the purpose for drawing on them in the first place. This may make no sense to anyone else. Basically, I want to draw just what I want for fun. That being said, just drawing the character on the cover can be boring. This gives me a chance to be a little creative. Going too far from “character” has become a bit of a fail for me. I try to use compositions the character might use. I feel like maybe I went on too much of a rant on this, so here are the dang drawings.
