Some new sketch covers I drew on. I prefer to never color. Seeing my work in digital makes me realize I am not very good at traditional coloring. I’m not too good at digital, but, that’s why I pay friends!
This month’s bootleg mascot was the Koolaid Man
This Month’s Scramble Jam event was really good! Talked with other artists about ideas and got a different perspective on the art game. SKA Brewing company caught wind of the coaster doodles and offered a little love for the next meet up. The meeting was held at Dutch’s Brewhouse . Very happy with how chill things are. I feel as these events continue we will have to expand numbers. I do little promoting. Mostly invite friends. I think now maybe it we should promote a little more.
Also drew on a blank cover. I’m doing less of these as other projects grow and are more demanding. I still think it’s important to have fun with fan art. I do my best on confining it to these covers. Slowly working them down.
I’ll leave with some random current sketchbook draws. Thanks for reading.
Been a while since I drew a blank cover. What better way to shake the cobwebs off than with Hawkeye as an old man?!
I also had a badly damaged LOW comic published by image comics. I seen a couple of empty pages with really cool colors on them, So….I torn them out and had the great idea to draw on them one day (horder style).
Cleaning up other loose ideas I had. I have to throw out things weekly. Things I thought were great ideas but didn’t get around to. I do this to avoid too much clutter. Sometimes I think I have a great idea. If I don’t begin them within two weeks, most likely it was not that good of an idea.
I didn’t do them for any reason than to draw on something different. I have them for sale. I do very little to promote my small shop, but at least things are up for sale. Here is the link (zarstar studios store)
Drew the Guyver for no reason other than I came across an old comic and thought it would be cool. Because the design is so detailed and specific there was not a lot of room to be too creative in style. I had fun learning the contours.
Also drew Spider-Woman in here early black 90’s costume because I think it’s the best design. Always feel compelled to do a little something on back, so Silk on a building was in order.
Last is a 90’s mullet Superman (get the theme?) I hate drawing superman. He is very difficult to draw because he is so simple yet specific. I’ve never been happy with any version I’ve done. This is the closest I’ve ever got.
I guess that’s it.
Crashing the Palm Springs Comic Con (that just means last minute). I’ve been mostly indoors for almost a week, so when an offer comes up to get sun and be social I kinda have to take it up. For those who were wondering my mullet has reached adolescence. Going to the show to talk My Emo Vortex, projects and the now 195 illustrated blank covers I’ll be taking.
Here are a few blank My Emo Vortex cover I drew on that I’ll have with me. If any of yous happen to be out there, stop by. I’ll have some things to give out also.
The tally has been counted. I have officially filled my 3rd magazine box of illustrated blank comic book covers! The count is 177 plus a few in a 4th box. Yay me? Now with this tower of boxes I am forced to ask myself the dreaded question, What now? I have no personal attachment to these original illustrations. It’s a reason for me to do some fan arting. I have to sell them. Here in lies the age old artist dilemma: How much? What if no one cares?
If no one cares then it’s easy. 1,000,000 dollars because if no one would buy it for 1 dollar they won’t buy it for 1,ooo,000 problem solved.
The thing is I know people would buy these, so I am faced with a value of worth. How am I going to do that?
Well, I’m thinking like this: How much did I pay for the material. )mainly the comic and ink if colored, packing materials ect)? What is the retail of the blank cover comic itself? How long did I spend on the illustration (including reference and composition research)?
What level of an artist am I, meaning how many hours have I spent drawing. This is the hard part because there is what I want to think and the honest truth. If you think some of these aren’t very good, it might be hard to believe that there are many I threw in the trash because they were bad even to my low standards.
All these things considered, What do I do if no one wants them? If I go lower in price will someone maybe want them? If someone wants to buy multiple do I cut a deal?
Where do I sell them? I haven’t quite figured that out. I have a bigcartel store (link to plug here) but It is an island and difficult to get visitors. Other community sales sites like etsy have a built in audience and a search engine for buyers that bigcartel does not. However it’s easier for a cave dweller like me to navigate to do commerce on.
Like most artists my work is not flying off the shelves. I’ve learned the hard way not to make my living trying to sell original art. This provides me with the confidence to be more conservative and say no to many of these questions.
What if no one wants them for the price I ask? I hate to say it, but I either throw them in the trash ripping them to shreds, or if I personally dig it, I hold on a little bit long for conversation piece at a show.
Discount for multiples? No. I’ve done this before and felt like and asshole. It’s not a commodity like underwear or Tina’s burritos. It’s not mass produced. It makes me feel cheap. I’ll wait until I’m completely homeless to feel that way. Believe it or not I have a homeless plan. I’ll save that for another article though.
I think it’s time to start listing some original art so… This drawing was made when I was watching Nightmare On Elm Street III: The Dream Warrior from the comfort of my drawing desk. I froze the frame and drew. It’s 9X12 inch and for sale at my webstore (Click)
Last original drawing of the week is MAD #538 (April 2016) Blank variant cover.
This is a blank variant cover MAD Magazine released. I tore my hair out looking for the right Alfred E. Newman look and then lighting struck! The BAS! I really love drawing this. Basil Wolverton is one of my many favorites!
If you’re curious as to the owning of this original here is the sale link (Click)
I plan to post original stuff once a week removing the previous week’s original’s if not sold.
Thanks for reading guys! I hope the day is good!
